UKATA set to inspire visitors to Chesterfield Christmas Tree Festival

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is marking Christmas 2016 by taking part in the Festival of Christmas Trees at the famous Crooked Spire Church in Chesterfield. From 19-27 November, over 90 trees will be on display, decorated by a variety of different businesses and people from the community.

The tree by UKATA at the Church of St Mary and All Saints is to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos and a reminder of potential exposure to the substance.

“The UKATA tree reflects the work of our association and our links to the local community,” said UKATA General Manager Craig Evans. “We have continued to work with the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (DAST) this year as we continue to keep asbestos awareness in the public mind.”

Any building constructed before the year 2000 could contain asbestos and it is not easy for the untrained eye to spot. Plasterboard, insulation and lagging so often found in loft spaces can contain asbestos and Christmas is a time when these spaces are visited more than usual.

“Our Chesterfield tree is another way for UKATA to ensure people are aware of the risks posed by asbestos and that Christmas is enjoyed safely,” added Craig. “Our message is simple – take care, enjoy Christmas and if in any doubt about asbestos in the home, consult a trained tradesperson for advice.”

The Parish Church is always worth a visit and the festival is the perfect way to round off a fantastic 2016 for UKATA. The Association joined the Chesterfield Champions, a group dedicated to raising the profile of the town; culminating in UKATA being ‘Highly Commended’ in the Small Business of the Year category at the Derbyshire Times Business Awards and Craig Evans being named as Business Person of the Year.

Tasked by the HSE in 2008 for taking-on, managing and developing the list of training providers for licensed asbestos work in the UK, UKATA is now the leading authority in all levels of asbestos training in the UK. For further information on UKATA, visit www.ukata.org.uk
