UKATA launches CPD Certification Service

UKATA training standards now at the forefront of the industry

Having announced membership of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Certification Service in April, the UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has now confirmed all systems are now live and all certificates now produced have CPD hours available and are eligible for CPD points.

Having launched the Association’s own CPD framework back in 2014, becoming a member of the Certification Service was an important next step to ensuring UKATA training standards remain at the forefront of the industry.

“We have been working hard on systems behind the scenes but now all is in place and we are delighted to officially launch this service for members, with a selection of CPD titles now available,” said

UKATA Membership Manager, Debbie Nixon.

CPD is something UKATA has been working on for several years and membership of the Certification Service is the culmination of a lot of hard work by UKATA General Manager, Craig Evans, together with the Senior Management Team. Recognising that asbestos training can involve a lot of vocational or practical learning and that safety training must be accessible, it was acknowledged early that CPD would need to form a key component of any comprehensive training programme.

“The UKATA board recognised the value of CPD early on and Craig has delivered a process that will deliver a considerable improvement for members,” added Debbie. “The long term aim back in 2014 was to see CPD deliver an overall improvement in asbestos safety and practice and this launch is intended to make this aim a reality. The bottom line must be a reduction in the number of asbestos related deaths reported each year and UKATA is keen to play a role in making this happen.”

Asbestos remains the biggest single cause of work related deaths in the UK and around 5,000 people die of asbestos related illnesses each year. Yet asbestos can be handled and removed safely by those who have received proper training and CPD is an essential component of such instruction.

“UKATA has become a leading authority on all categories of training, not least asbestos awareness and CPD has become a key component,” added Debbie. “CPD Certification represents an important step forward not just for UKATA but the industry as a whole and we are looking forward to developing the syllabus and process further in the months and years ahead.”
