Asda Recall Product Due to Possible Asbestos Contamination

The retailer Asda has announced a product recall notice on their website due to a risk to health, the item has been sold by the chain since 2021.

The Sand Art Bottle, Barcode: (EAN: 5015934717660) may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. This product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.

Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.

This recall forms part of a broader pattern of incidents involving asbestos contamination in children’s products, particularly those containing sand or powder-based materials. UK regulators have identified multiple products across major retailers that failed to meet safety requirements due to the presence of asbestos fibres.

These cases underline ongoing challenges in supply chain oversight and product testing, particularly where materials are sourced internationally. They also reinforce the importance of robust compliance with product safety regulations designed to protect consumers from hazardous substances.

Product recalls are a critical safeguard, but their effectiveness depends on consumer awareness and prompt action. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay informed about recall notices and act quickly where affected products are identified.

Where asbestos contamination is suspected, additional caution is essential. Improper handling may increase the risk of exposure, particularly if fibres become airborne. Following official guidance is key to ensuring risks are minimised.

UKATA will continue to monitor developments and provide factual, proportionate guidance to members and the wider public. Maintaining awareness, without causing unnecessary alarm, remains central to effective asbestos risk management.
