UKATA is marking Mesothelioma Awareness Day on 26 September, joining organisations and individuals around the world in raising awareness of mesothelioma and remembering those whose lives have been affected by this devastating asbestos-related disease.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day is observed annually on 26 September and provides an opportunity to put mesothelioma firmly in the spotlight and remind people of the continuing consequences of asbestos exposure. The day brings together patients, families, survivors, healthcare professionals, campaigners and organisations working to raise awareness and prevent future asbestos-related disease.
As Linda Reinstein, President and CEO of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) has previously said:
“Mesothelioma Awareness Day is much more than a date on a calendar. It’s part of ADAO’s daily mission to prevent asbestos exposure and eliminate mesothelioma as well as other deadly asbestos-caused diseases.”
Her words highlight the purpose behind the annual awareness day, ensuring that mesothelioma is not forgotten and that awareness leads to action. For those living with the disease and their families, the day also provides an opportunity for their experiences to be heard and recognised.
UKATA Corporate Partner, the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS), is also supporting Mesothelioma Awareness Day and the continued efforts to raise awareness of the risks associated with asbestos exposure.
Prof. Paul Hallett, President of BSSS, said:
“Mesothelioma Awareness Day remembers those affected by this devastating disease and recognises the lasting environmental legacy of asbestos. Much of asbestos pollution ends up in soil, and soil scientists have an important role in protecting people from asbestos fibres that can persist in the environment for decades.”
