UKATA recently hosted its free webinar, The Armley Tragedy, presented by Adrian Budgen OBE on Friday 25 September 2026. The session attracted registrations from the asbestos, industrial diseases sector and futher afield.
Adrian Budgen OBE, Partner and Head of Asbestos and Occupational Disease at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, represented June Hancock in her landmark legal case against Turner & Newall following asbestos exposure in Armley, Leeds. During the webinar, he explored the circumstances surrounding June’s case and the wider significance of the Armley tragedy.
June was the second member of her family to sadly develop mesothelioma[VC1] . Her case became the first environmental asbestos case to be brought in the UK, highlighting the devastating impact that asbestos contamination can have on communities beyond the workplace.
Membership Account Manager, Olivia Anderson, who presented on behalf of UKATA, said:
“Webinar attendees were very interested to hear Adrian share his knowledge and experience of June Hancock’s case and the wider Armley tragedy.
We’re grateful to Adrian for taking the time to share such an important story with our audience and pleased to have provided an opportunity for people to learn more about the lasting impact of asbestos exposure on individuals, families and communities.
We also appreciate the positive feedback from attendees following the session.”
The webinar provided an opportunity to learn more about the lasting impact of asbestos contamination in Armley and the importance of understanding the history and consequences of environmental asbestos exposure.
It was a particularly moving session, as June Hancock’s story brought a very human perspective to the devastating impact of asbestos exposure. Hearing about June not only as a significant figure in the legal history of asbestos, but as a mother and a person whose life was profoundly affected by mesothelioma, was incredibly moving.
The session forms part of UKATA’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness of asbestos risks and providing free, accessible education on important issues affecting the asbestos industry and wider public.
