On 30 July 2026, UKATA hosted a webinar exploring the enduring impact of asbestos in the UK's built environment and the challenges of managing legacy asbestos-containing materials that have exceeded their intended lifespan. The session was delivered by acclaimed writer and education worker Tom White, author of Bad Dust: A History of the Asbestos Disaster.
Hosted by UKATA's Membership Account Manager, Olivia Anderson, the webinar examined the historical legacy of asbestos in the UK and explored how the issues of the past continue to influence asbestos management today. Drawing on the extensive research behind the publication “Bad Dust”, Tom considered the ongoing risks posed by ageing asbestos-containing materials and questioned whether the UK is any closer to implementing a coordinated national asbestos removal strategy.
During the webinar, Tom reflected on the events and decisions that contributed to the UK's asbestos legacy and discussed how asbestos continues to shape risk management across public and private sector buildings. The session encouraged attendees to consider whether current management practices are sufficient for the future and highlighted the importance of continued discussion around long-term asbestos policy.
Tom White completed his PhD in English & Humanities at Birkbeck, University of London and has written extensively on labour, infrastructure and public health. His work has appeared in publications including The Guardian, London Review of Books, Tribune, History Workshop and Notes from Below. Through his research and writing, Tom brings a distinctive historical and social perspective to one of the UK's most significant occupational health issues.
The webinar attracted attendees from across the asbestos sector, including training providers, duty holders, surveyors, consultants and other professionals responsible for the safe management of asbestos.
