AoC Health and Safety Conference for UKATA

Asbestos Association set to attend on 4 May

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) will mark its first appearance at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Health and Safety Conference on 4 May by educating delegates on the ongoing dangers of asbestos. UKATA Director and renowned asbestos specialist Professor Roger Willey will be delivering a keynote speech on the subject of asbestos in the 21st Century.

Taking place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nottingham, the Conference is an opportunity for delegates to gain insight from inspirational speakers and thought leaders and hear about good practice and from other institutions. Sessions will look into health and safety legislation, how to have effective health and safety conversations, work placements, the prevent duty, stress prevention and wellbeing.

“This year will be the first time UKATA has attended the AoC event and we are really looking forward to it,” said UKATA General Manager Craig Evans. “Professor Willey is taking one of the afternoon breakout sessions at 3:50 pm and if his previous appearances at other Conferences are anything to go by, it will be a popular session and those who are unaware of Professor Willey’s reputation are in for a rare treat.”

As one of the world’s foremost experts on asbestos and hazardous materials, Professor Willey needs no introduction. With over 35 years of industry experience, the UKATA Director undertakes speaking engagements worldwide and is a respected expert witness in asbestos related court cases. This has included cases in Scotland; the High Courts of Ireland and Australia, as well as acting as Court Appointed Expert in the High Court in London. The Professor has served as Branch Chairman of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Advisor to the Secretary of State for Scotland on Sustainable Development and remains a Director of UKATA and sits on the National Executive Committee.

As part of his presentation entitled Asbestos in the 21st Century, Professor Willey will be covering changes in death patterns, the mesothelioma cycle, Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) and how to break the mesothelioma cycle.

“AoC Conference is another opportunity to debate the issues and confront the challenges facing today’s health and safety professionals,” added Craig. “As asbestos remains the UK’s biggest workplace killer, Roger’s lecture will bring delegates up to speed on the issues they need to be aware of and importantly, some of the solutions.”

UKATA exists to set and verify standards and to emphasise the importance of best practice in training when it comes to the safe handling, removal and disposal of asbestos. Tasked by the HSE in 2008 for taking-on, managing and developing the list of training providers for licensed asbestos work in the UK, UKATA is now the leading authority in all levels of asbestos training in the UK.
