UKATA announced as Media Partner for Contamination EXPO 2016

UKATA director set to give keynote speech in October

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has been unveiled as the official media partner for The Contamination EXPO Series. Taking place from 12-13 October at ExCeL in London, UKATA will be exhibiting at the event, while a representative from the UKATA board is also set to address delegates.

A major new European Exhibition, The Contamination EXPO Series 2016 offers the latest knowledge, products and innovations to manage all aspects of contamination, from land remediation, spill response to air pollution and hazardous materials. See: http://www.hazardouswasteexpo.com/

“UKATA is proud to be one of the official media partners for the Contamination EXPO this year,” said UKATA Marketing Officer, Victoria Castelluccio. “The event will have a major focus on asbestos, which is perfect as part of our overall awareness campaign strategy, and we are looking forward to both exhibiting and to putting forward one of our directors to address this important EXPO.”

Asbestos remains the biggest single cause of work related deaths in the UK. Around 5,000 people die of asbestos related illnesses each year, yet this hazardous substance remains a hidden killer and people continue to die due to ignorance as much as anything else. Exposure to asbestos is entirely preventable and it can be handled and removed safely by those who have received the proper training.

“An estimated half a million commercial properties in the UK alone contain some form of asbestos, so it is highly likely that workers will come into contact with the substance in some form,” added Victoria. “Asbestos can be found in both domestic and commercial buildings and indeed in soils and we will be using our stand at the EXPO to make people aware of the facts and encourage people to join the Association. Everyone at UKATA is very excited to be involved with the EXPO and very much looking forward to it.”

The exhibition will feature over 120 hours of CPD accredited, free-to-attend seminar conference content, networking and the exhibition show floor will be filled with companies and Associations like UKATA offering the most innovative products, solutions and expertise in cleaning up, or preventing contamination. A key part of UKATA’s work is to ensure standards of training remain high and to remind everyone of their responsibilities when it comes to the safe management and removal of asbestos, making the EXPO a must-attend event.

The EXPO will cover Land Remediation, Spill Response and Hazardous Materials and UKATA has an interest in all of these areas. Land remediation is an emerging issue, as concerns over asbestos in soil begin to gather pace.

“Asbestos has always been perceived as simply an airborne hazard, but asbestos in soil is an issue that can no longer be ignored,” added Victoria. “A level of 0.001% of asbestos fibre in soil used to be considered safe, but does not take into account the variety of soil types in the UK and their different compositions. Dry sandy soil could release more asbestos fibres than wet clay – just one example of the kind of issues that need to be taken into account when dealing with land remediation involving asbestos.”

In the months leading up to the EXPO, UKATA will be working to promote the event and revealing more about what to expect from UKATA at the EXPO, together with confirmation of UKATA’s keynote speaker and the topics they will be covering as part of their presentation.

UKATA is the leading authority for asbestos training provision in the United Kingdom. Tasked by the HSE in 2008 to manage the licensed asbestos training providers, UKATA has gone from strength to strength and now has more than 180 member organisations from all corners of the UK.
