UKATA Attends Mesothelioma UK Corporate Thank You Day

Representatives from UKATA, Craig Evans and Debbie Nixon, were proud to attend the recent Corporate Thank You Day hosted by Mesothelioma UK. The event brought together corporate donors, industry stakeholders and individuals personally affected by mesothelioma for an afternoon of insight and collaboration.

UKATA is a Gold Corporate Partner of Mesothelioma UK and has supported the national charity for over a decade, helping it provide specialist care and support to people affected by mesothelioma, an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

The event was opened and hosted by journalist and Mesothelioma UK Trustee Kate Williams, who shared her own experience living with peritoneal mesothelioma. Attendees then heard from a range of speakers, including Liz Darlison MBE, Chief Executive Officer of Mesothelioma UK, who outlined how vital donations have supported services to date and detailed ambitious future plans. These include expanding specialist care through the introduction of mesothelioma nurses across all regions, alongside dedicated support roles for army veterans and younger patients.

A key theme throughout the event was the continued need for stronger national focus on asbestos. One speaker highlighted the absence of a comprehensive UK National Asbestos Strategy, noting how other building-related risks have received more immediate attention.

A particularly powerful contribution came from mesothelioma patient Sue Farrall, who shared her personal journey from initial symptoms through to diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosed in 2022 at the age of 56, Sue spoke candidly about the challenges of delayed diagnosis due to not fitting the “typical demographic,” as well as the life-altering impact of her treatment. Her story resonated deeply with attendees, underscoring the very real human cost of asbestos exposure. Despite these challenges, Sue continues to campaign tirelessly, raising significant funds and awareness for the cause.

Also speaking was Graham Gould of Thermal Recycling and a Mesothelioma UK Trustee, who emphasised the importance of securing long-term financial support through increased corporate engagement within the asbestos industry.

The event also provided valuable opportunities for networking, with attendees including representatives from ASESA, UKNAR, and UKATA Industry Associates DSK Environmental Ltd, among others. Following a series of informative presentations, guests continued discussions over a buffet lunch.

Senior Operations manager for UKATA, Debbie Nixon commented:

“The Corporate Thank You Day was both informative and deeply moving. It was valuable to connect with others across the industry, but most importantly to hear directly from those affected by mesothelioma. Sue’s story in particular was incredibly impactful and a powerful reminder of why the work we all do matters so much. Events like this reinforce the importance of continued collaboration and support for Mesothelioma UK’s vital work.”

Chief Operating Officer, Craig Evans added “Mesothelioma UK is an incredible charity, closely linked to the asbestos industry and the people we represent. As COO of UKATA and a Trustee of Mesothelioma UK, I have the privilege of seeing first-hand the life-changing work they deliver, and I would encourage others across the industry to consider supporting this vital cause”.

Looking ahead, Mesothelioma UK continues to drive awareness and fundraising through a number of key upcoming events. These include Action Mesothelioma Day 2026 on 3rd July, which brings communities together across the UK to raise awareness of mesothelioma, as well as the Charity Race Day scheduled for 8th June 2026. These events, alongside many others, play a crucial role in supporting patients and ensuring continued progress in the fight against this devastating disease. For more information Click Here
