UKATA announces new RPE Syllabus

New half day course set to ensure asbestos workers breathe easy

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has launched a new syllabus which has been developed to enhance training in connection with Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE). The course for ‘Respiratory Protective Equipment – Competent Person’ is now available to through UKATA members.

“The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, Regulation 10 requires employers to ensure adequate information, instruction and training is given to employees liable to be exposed to asbestos (http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/hseboard/2013/260613/pjunb1367draftacop.pdf) and this new syllabus is intended to assist employers with the importance of RPE inspection,” said UKATA General Manager Craig Evans when commenting on the new course. “The syllabus is designed for Managers and Supervisors responsible for checking correct procedures are followed by workers when using RPE.”

RPE is essential for those charged with the safe removal and disposal of asbestos and UKATA members offer training in awareness of asbestos and, at higher levels, the correct and safe use of RPE, which this new syllabus will be an important new addition.

“Everyone recognises the essential role of RPE but this new syllabus makes clear the importance of equipment inspection and record keeping,” added Craig. “Following the rules is not enough. People need to understand why employees must undergo face fit testing and the value of such procedures and this half day course is an essential new segment to the current courses offered by UKATA members.

By the end of the course, individuals will be competent to perform monthly checks on RPE in accordance with manufacturer instructions and to record appropriately following the HSE guidance (HSG53) on Respiratory Equipment at Work. This new syllabus is categorised as a half day extension course with the pre-requisite of a UKATA Asbestos Awareness Course.

Anyone interested in the new course should contact UKATA direct or visit www.ukata.org.uk to find an approved training provider.
